Can medical treatment get me a China residence permit?

Yes — and it is one of the least-known routes to a year-long stay. A foreign national receiving medical treatment or assistance in China can apply for a residence permit, and a hospital or medical-service record covering six months or more supports a one-year permit. Unlike a visa, it is applied for inside China, at the exit-entry administration of the local public security bureau. For long-stay visitors with no job and no family in China, it is the closest thing the system offers to a fixed, year-long status.

This is a residence permit, not a medical visa, and not a guaranteed outcome — officers decide case by case. Verify the specifics with the local exit-entry administration and your hospital before relying on it.

How the route works

The logic is simple: an ongoing treatment need documented by a hospital supports a stay that matches the treatment.

  1. Establish an ongoing treatment need at a hospital with an international or foreign-patient department — the places used to handling overseas patients and documentation.
  2. Get the documentation right: an admission or treatment record, the diagnosis, and a treatment plan that covers six months or more. This document is the basis of the whole application.
  3. Apply at the local exit-entry administration (the public security bureau office) with the hospital documents, your passport, your current visa or entry record, and photographs.
  4. Receive the residence permit — typically one year — and renew it while the treatment continues. The permit is tied to the treatment; it is not work authorisation.

Why this matters for long-stay visitors. Every other route for someone with no Chinese employer and no family in the country runs on border runs — an exit every 30 or 60 days. A medical residence permit replaces that cycle with a fixed address, multiple entries and exits, and a year of continuous stay.

What the permit gives you — and what it does not

Scope of a medical-treatment residence permit, as of October 2026
It gives you It does not give you
Multiple entries and exits without visa runs Any right to work — employment needs a separate work permit
Up to a year of continuous stay in China A guaranteed renewal — each application is decided on its documents
A registered fixed address, which simplifies everything from banking to deliveries Automatic coverage for family members — family permits are a separate category
A stable base for repeat treatment trips Permanent residency by itself — it is a renewable permit, not a status upgrade

The system this route sits inside

Inbound medical care is one of the fastest-growing parts of China’s services economy, and the infrastructure for foreign patients has been built out quickly.

Published figures on international medical care in China, with dates
Measure Figure Period / date
International patient visits at foreign-related hospitals ~1.28 million 2025; up roughly 74% over three years
Specially approved drugs and devices, Boao Lecheng zone 593 Across 41 clinical disciplines; 3.4 million+ cumulative visits
Medical-tourism visits, Boao Lecheng zone 721,000 January–July 2026
Of which from overseas 8,680 January–July 2026; about 5.4× the year before
Institutions accepting direct billing from international insurers 8–9 Boao Lecheng, as of 2026

Figures are drawn from published industry and zone announcements as of October 2026. The Boao Lecheng pilot zone in Hainan is the only place in China that can use drugs and devices approved abroad but not yet approved domestically — which is why it draws the overseas patient numbers it does.

The honest caveats

This is a case-by-case route, not a form with a guaranteed answer. Documentation standards vary by city and by hospital, and the exit-entry administration decides on the evidence in front of it. Treat the six-month record as the anchor of the application, confirm the local requirements with the bureau before you travel, and do not build a year of plans on a single conversation.

Questions people ask before they book

Can medical treatment get me a China residence permit?

Yes. A foreign national receiving medical treatment or assistance in China can apply for a residence permit, and a hospital or medical-service record covering six months or more supports a one-year permit. It is applied for inside China at the local exit-entry administration, and each application is decided on its documents.

Can I apply for the medical residence permit on a tourist entry?

The permit is applied for inside China, and the treatment record is the basis — but how you entered matters and practice varies by city. Discuss the sequence with the hospital's international department and the local exit-entry administration before you travel.

How long does the application take?

Weeks, not days, and it varies by city and by how complete the hospital documentation is. Build the processing time into your travel plan rather than assuming a same-week answer.

Does the permit cover my spouse?

No. Family members fall under the family-reunification permit categories, which have their own qualifying rules. A spouse would need to qualify separately.

Is this the same as a medical visa?

No. Visas are issued by Chinese embassies and visa centres outside China. The medical route described here is a residence permit applied for inside China, on the strength of an ongoing treatment record.
